Air Passenger Travel Between US and Europe Up 87%


February 2023 International Air Passenger Travel to and from the United States

According to the latest data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), US-International air traffic passenger enplanements (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures) totaled 15.735 million in February 2023, with enplanements reaching 91.8% of pre-pandemic February 2019 volume.

Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in February 2023

• Non-US Citizen Air Passenger Arrivals to the United States from foreign countries totaled:

  • 3.609 million in February 2023, up 67.1% compared to February 2022.
  • 77.6% of pre-pandemic February 2019 volume.

On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals (2) (with stays of 1-night or more in the United States and visiting under certain visa types) (ADIS/ I-94) totaled 1.791 million in February 2023, the sixteenth consecutive month overseas visitor arrivals exceeded 1.0 million. February overseas visitor arrivals reached 68.8% of pre-pandemic February 2019 volume, up from 67% in January 2022.

• US Citizen Air Passenger Departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled:

  • 4.252 million in February 2023, up 53.0% compared to February 2022 and exceeding February 2019 volume by 9.3%.

World Region Highlights in February 2023 (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures)

• Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by:

  • Mexico 3.037 million, Canada 2.127 million, the United Kingdom 1.004 million, the Dominican Republic 747,000 and Germany 492,000.

• International regional air travel to/from the United States:

  • Europe totaled 3.224 million passengers, up 87.1% over February 2022, and down only (-14.1%) compared to February 2019.
  • South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 4.454 million, up 28.3% over February 2022, and down only (-0.4%) compared to February 2019.
  • Asia totaled 1.513 million passengers, up 279.2% over February 2022, but still down (-45.4%) compared to February 2019.

• Top U.S. Ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 2.041 million, Miami (MIA) 1.789 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 1.372 million, Newark (EWR) 882,000 and San Francisco (SFO) 820,000.

• Top Foreign Ports serving U.S. locations were Cancun (CUN) 1.064 million, London Heathrow (LHR) 887,000, Toronto (YYZ) 869,000, Mexico City (MEX) 543,000, and Inchon (ICN) 442,000.
