Because of the insecurity in the country, Costa Rica could become a less attractive destination for international travelers.
Tourists could become victims of the increase in crime related to drug trafficking, according to Hernán Imhoff, president of the Tamarindo Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
“Let’s remember that one of the factors that are analyzed when traveling to a country is related to the climate of that nation in terms of crime. No one in their right mind will ever go to a country where their life or that of family members is in danger,” the expert said.
For this reason, he points out that any strategy that the government presents to combat crime must be aggressive to prevent losing tourists.
“We need a much more aggressive strategy in the fight against crime that includes improving the resources of the Public Force such as adequate salary conditions, a greater number of troops, better technology and means of transportation, among other facilities” Imhoff added.
In addition, experts warn that any plan must have the security support of local governments and Chambers of Tourism.
