Despite rising prices, Austria’s hotels, guesthouses, and holiday apartments recorded the third-highest number of overnight stays, following the record winters of 2017/18 and 2018/19, reported by the Statistics of Austria.
Significant increase in overnight stays and arrivals
Compared to the previous season, the number of overnight stays in the past winter season rose by 31.4 percent to 69.29 million. This represents an increase of 16.57 million overnight stays. Although this figure is 3.63 million overnight stays or 5 percent lower than the previous high (winter season 2018/19: 72.92 million), it is one of the three best results. The number of arrivals also rose significantly by 45.5 percent to 18.94 million.
Foreign guests drive the growth of Austria’s tourism
Foreign guests significantly contributed to the winter season’s success with 53.46 million overnight stays, an increase of 34.5 percent from the previous year. Domestic visitors also contributed to the positive development, with a growth of 22.0 percent to a total of 15.82 million overnight stays.
The growth registered from different source markets
German guests were particularly active, with 25.73 million overnight stays, an increase of 25.8 percent compared with the 2021/22 winter season. Tourists from the Netherlands also recorded a rise of 20.0% to 6.7 million overnight stays. Guests from Switzerland and Liechtenstein increased their overnight stays by 58.7 percent to 1.87 million, while Italy recorded an increase of 154.2 percent to 984,100 overnight stays. The Asian market, especially China, also showed strong growth. The 89,600 overnight stays by Chinese guests represented an increase of 210.6 percent from the previous season.
