The Swiss hotel industry is experiencing a consistent increase in overnight stays, which continued in April and set a new record for the 2022/23 winter season. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the number of overnight stays in April rose by 12 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 2.83 million. This boost was mainly due to increased foreign guests, whose numbers rose 38 percent. Although domestic guests saw a decrease of 5.3 percent in overnight stays, overall demand for hotel accommodations remained strong.
Record winter season
Swiss hotels saw a significant increase in overnight stays during the winter season from November 22 to April 23, setting a new record, according to the FSO. Overnight stays rose 18 percent, reaching 17.4 million. Foreign tourists also contributed to this increase, with a 43 percent rise to 8.1 million visitors. The largest group of guests came from Germany, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Domestic bookings also saw a new record, with a 2.5 percent rise to 9.3 million visitors, compared to the previous record season of 2021/22. Demand was strong in all months except March and April.
