Starting in June, short-term rentals will be prohibited in Florence’s historic center as a bold measure to address residents’ loss. The ban will only apply moving forward, and to encourage long-term rentals, the local government plans to waive Imu taxes for three years on second homes.
During a press conference, the Mayor of Florence, Nardella, emphasized the city’s plan to use fiscal incentives to encourage owners currently participating in short-term rentals to switch back to long-term rentals. This measure aims to protect historic centers of art cities. It could result in an IMU fee of over 2,000 euros annually for second homes in the center of Florence. Nardella also expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Tourism’s recent draft decree on short-term rentals, stating that it ignores the planning and regulation entrusted to local governments and that he could legally defend his measure.
